Game Spotlight - Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (WFRP) is a tabletop roleplaying game originally published by Games Workshop in 1986, and currently on its 4th edition published by Cubicle 7. The game is inseparably intertwined with its setting, the Old World, a fantasy version of Renaissance Europe centered on the Holy Roman Empire (simply called “The Empire” in WFRP), with the addition of dwarfs, elves, magic, and the existential threat of Chaos, exemplified by the Ruinous powers. Chaos also comprises the source of magical power, making spellcasting unpredictable and at times dangerous.

While containing all the elements that comprise the stereotypical fantasy setting, WFRP manages to combine those familiar elements creating a setting that feels deep, multifaceted, and interesting, no doubt due in part to the decades of development and interest from the associated wargame. It is, in my opinion, the best “D&D setting” ever written, despite the technical incorrectness of that statement.

Accordingly, I am adapting and compiling WFRP game material for use with my OSR retroclone of choice, Fantastic Heroes & Witchery.

Bestiary of the Old World - stats for beastmen and skaven, saved and reformatted from Dan at Sword and Board

Tzeench's Curse - for use with the Spell Failure system from my houserules

Backgrounds - from the FH&W Rulebook, randomized according to race, in the tradition of WFRP, with starting equipment, skills, armor and weapon proficiencies for expedited character creation.
